Your First Season Survival Guide for MiniRoos Parents

Starting something new can feel a little daunting, but your child's first MiniRoos season should be nothing but exciting. From what to pack to what to expect on the sideline, this guide covers everything first-time MiniRoos families need to know before that opening whistle.

So your little one is about to kick off their first Coles MiniRoos season. First things first: well done for signing them up. You're in for a really lovely ride.

If you're feeling a little unsure about what to expect, you're not alone. Every Coles MiniRoos parent was a first-timer once. To help you feel ready and relaxed from day one, here's everything you need to know before that first whistle blows.

First Things First: Your Participant Pack

Before you even think about what to pack, here's some good news. Every child who registers for Coles MiniRoos Kick-Off receives a participant pack delivered straight to your door. Inside you'll find a Nike Coles MiniRoos shirt, a football, a backpack, a lunchbox, a water bottle, an activity booklet and a tin of Milo. It's a brilliant little bundle that takes care of most of the basics before your child has even set foot on the pitch.

You can find out everything about what's included and how sizing works over on the Participant Pack page.

What to Bring

Once your pack arrives, game day prep becomes pretty simple. Here's your go-to checklist:

  • Boots and shin pads. These are non-negotiable. Most other gear can be sorted as you go, but shin pads are required from the very first session.
  • A water bottle. A big one. Kids run more than you think, and staying hydrated keeps the fun going.
  • A light snack. Something easy like a piece of fruit or a small muesli bar for after the session works perfectly.
  • Sunscreen and a hat. We're in Australia. Enough said.
  • A spare change of clothes. Especially for the younger ones. Muddy pitches and clean car seats don't mix well.

What to Expect

The first session can feel a little chaotic, and that's completely normal. Young kids are finding their feet, coaches are getting to know the group, and more than a few children will spend at least part of the session more interested in the grass than the ball.

That's okay. Actually, it's more than okay. Coles MiniRoos is designed to meet kids exactly where they are. The focus is on fun and participation, not performance or results. There are no scores to worry about, no pressure to be the best, just children learning to love the game at their own pace.

By week three or four, you'll barely recognise the same child who stood nervously at the edge of the pitch on day one.

How to Get Involved

One of the best things about Coles MiniRoos is the community it creates, not just for kids but for parents too. Here are a few easy ways to make the most of it:

Cheer, don't coach. Leave the tactics to the coaches and focus on encouragement. A simple "great effort!" goes a long way.

Chat to other parents. The sideline is a surprisingly great place to make friends. Most families are just as new to this as you are.

Volunteer if you can. Clubs always welcome an extra pair of hands, whether that's helping set up cones, running a snack roster, or eventually having a go at coaching yourself.

One Last Thing

There will be sessions where your child doesn't want to participate. There will be tears, the occasional tantrum, and at least one game where they decide chasing butterflies is more interesting than chasing the ball.

Go with it. The joy of Coles MiniRoos is that there's no wrong way to have fun. Just keep showing up, keep cheering them on, and watch what happens over time.

You've got this, and so do they.
